Prostate cancer affects the prostate gland which is located right below the bladder. This type of cancer is known to be the most common among men. Ranked as the fourth most common cancer worldwide, it has been proven that the American men; especially African-American men are the most affected.
Prostate cancer does not affect just anyone from any age bracket. Research has shown that older men are at higher risk of being diagnosed with it, and the saddest fact is that most of them die undiagnosed. These elderly men experience benign prostatic hyperplasia - which is the increase in size of the prostate.
This cancer is supposed to be treated as early as possible because it more often than not gets fatal if left untreated. Nonetheless prostate cancer surgery can also be undertaken to treat the disease. There are two forms of surgery: invasive or radical surgery and non-invasive or Laparoscopic surgery.
The invasive surgical procedure is referred to as Radical Prostatectomy which entails the removal of the whole prostate gland and any tissues that surrounds it to avoid further infection. The surgeons are advised to first check if the cancer has spread beyond the prostate to avoid higher risk of minimum survival.
On the other hand, the non-invasive procedure is referred to as Laparoscopic prostatectomy. It is given that name because an instrument by the name of a Laparoscope is used. This Laparoscope is inserted into minor incisions made in the prostate region hence there is no need to cut open the patient. This instrument contains a light and a lens which helps in viewing the cells to be cut out.
